1991 年主导成立西雅图华人生物医学协会，策划将“国际人类基因组计划” 引回国内。1994 年回国创建吉比爱生物技术(北京)有限公司，积极推动人类基因组计划的实施。1999 年为承接人类基因组计划的中国部分，主导创建华大基因。2003 至 2007 年任中国科学院基因组研究所副所长。2007 年南下深圳，创建深圳华大基因研究院以及之后的科研、教育与产业体系。    

二十多年来他痴心不改，坚信基因科技必将造福人类，并以此为终极目标， 以项目带动学科建设、人才培养和产业应用，坚持科学发现、技术发明和产业发展的联动，带领华大走出了独特的“三发三带”发展模式。  从承担“国际人类基因组计划”1%任务、“国际人类单体型图计划”10%任务，到独立完成“亚洲人基因组图谱”100%任务，再到完成“国际千人基因组计划”亚洲部分，汪建领导华大完成了从参与接轨、到独立同步、再到引领支撑的蜕变和进化过程。华大建立了世界一流的基因科技基础和应用研究体系，负责运营世界最大规模的深圳国家基因库，完成了对美国 Complete Genomics（前纳斯达克代码：GNOM）的收购，实现了基因测序仪器的自助可控和国产化，旗下的上市公司也已成为行业领军企业。华大已成长为世界生命科学领域的先锋队、中国的主力军和国家的战略力量。汪建作为这支队伍的领军者和掌舵人，创立了完整的“基因读写存”科技体系，立志将中国出生缺陷、癌症、传感染病防控推向世界领先水平并造福人类。     

汪建爱好极限运动，如单板滑雪、高山速降和风帆冲浪等，并成功攀登三座 8000 米以上雪山(包括 56 岁登顶世界最高峰——海拔 8848 米的珠穆朗玛峰)。他主张“先行、先试、先乐”的理念，坚持先行者只有做好自己才能说服  别人。他以追求人类终极目标和意义为己任，立志做挑战生命科技极限的先行者，做新时代人类命运共同体的践行者。汪建坚信：造福人类，实现美好人生，必须“从我做起”。   

Wang Jian  

Co-founder and chairman of BGI group  Wang Jian 

was born in Yuanling, Hunan Province, China in 1954. He graduated from  Hunan Medical College in 1979, and obtained a master's degree in Integrated Medicines  from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 1986. From 1988 to 1994, he continued  his studies overseas focusing on cell proliferation and differentiation as the research  fellowship at the University of Texas, the University of Iowa and the University of  Washington. 

Inspired by the international Human Genome Project (HGP) in 1991, he established the  Seattle Chinese Biomedical Association and planned to introduce the project back to China.  He returned to China in 1994 and set up Jubilee Biotechnology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., in an  effort to actively promote the HGP. In 1999, he co-founded BGI in order to engage in  research contributing to the HGP. From 2003 to 2007, he served as Deputy Director of  the Institute of Genomics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2007, BGI moved from  Beijing to Shenzhen, focusing on the organizational task of integrating research, education  and industry. 

Over the past two decades, he has remained true to his aspiration and belief that advancing  omics and related technologies will benefit people everywhere. To achieve this goal, BGI  has formed a unique development model——scientific discovery, technological invention  and industrial development, in coordination with cultivating talent and developing new  fields of study and industrial applications. Wang Jian has served as the decision-maker and  leader for research and application projects at BGI, leading a group of experts to make a  number of remarkable achievements, including the International HapMap Project  (undertaking 10% of the workload), Chinese Genome Map and International 1000  Genomes Project. BGI has created a world-class foundation in life science and omics  technology, as well as an applied research system, operating the China National GeneBank  and manufacturing fully automated nucleic acids sequencers, a capability only achieved by  less than a handful of companies worldwide. Recently, Wang Jian led a successful initial  public offering of BGI Genomics in the Chinese stock exchange. Wang Jian has  established a complete system of trans-omics reading, writing and storage. He is  determined to make collaborative efforts to control the birth defects, cancer, and infectious  diseases and benefit the mankind.  

Wangjian is a fan of extreme sports, including snowboarding, windsurfing and climbing.  He has conquered some world’s highest peaks, including Mountain Everest at the age of  56. He is devoted to health and fitness, both practicing an active lifestyle and also helping  to inspire others. Pursuing the ultimate goal and the meaning of life as his mission, he is a  pioneer that challenges the limits of life science and technology and a practitioner of the  community of a shared future for mankind in the new era. He firmly believes that benefiting mankind and achieving a better life should start from self-practice.
